calcuwhat?

have i bitched about my calculus class? have i bitched about my calculus professor who wins awards for being an awful instructor. i take that back, he can't even be called an instructor. thursday of last week he announced that we were going to spend the entire class working problems from the book together (the entire class lets out a sigh of relief because thus far he's been talking concepts, and concepts are swell, but they're not getting us through the homework and they won't get us through the exam). So he picks a problem and then spends the next 45 minutes on his laptop (which runs linux), writing a c++ program that will solve the problem. at the end of 45 minutes, he uses the c++ program he just wrote to calculate the answer and says "see? easy." then attempts to move onto the next question. what?? hold up, cowboy. go ahead and strap the feedbag on your horse, we're not going anywhere...


someone in the class asks him if, perhaps, he could work the problem by hand so we know how we, who don't run linux and don't know c++ programming (the entire 50 person class), would know how to solve the problem on an exam. he tells us he can't do it by hand because it would take 40 minutes. someone else asks if he could show us how to calculate the problem on our scientific calculators (you know, the $100+ calculators the university made us buy for this course) and he says it's not his responsibility to show us how to use our calculators and we should read our manuals. ok, well, if that's not your responsibility and showing us how to do it by hand is not your responsibility, then what, exactly, is your fucking responsibility professor McCheese? He's a joke. I'm sure he's all kinds of intelligent, but as a professor, he's a total dud. And I'm paying a grand for this class? Are you kidding? I'll learn more from my tutor, who costs half as much, than i can ever hope to get from this peanut-head. and, for those who are even vaguely interested, that problem above is the stuff we're currently working on... and if it just inherently makes sense to you, i soooo don't want to hear it...
