while i was in florida i had the following conversation with my dad, which confirmed something that i always believed to be true, but he'd never said before...
the scene: sitting at the kitchen counter, around midnight, talking about school
me: ...and if i do that, then I can start grad school about a year sooner
dad: and what are you going to do there?
me: get my MBA (masters of business administration)
dad: oh, that's good (but sincere, happy)
me: yeah, i thought you might be happy if i got my MBA
him: well, *i'd* like to see you get your doctorate
and there it is. i always suspected that my dad would like to see me as dr. raphie and now it's confirmed... that isn't a bad thing, of course, because obviously it means he thinks i'm smart enough, dedicated enough and worthy of earning a doctorate, but on the other hand, it will, from now on, always be in the back of my head that to *really* make my dad proud, i need to get a PhD...
